Back in the day, it used to be that you could move to a different state and escape the consequences of a DUI conviction. However, those those days are long gone. Now, thanks to the Interstate Driver’s License Compact and the National Driver’s Registry, a DUI in one state is available to the computers in all states. Additionally, the DMVs across the country will cross reference with each other. As a result, your DUI will continue to haunt you in any state.
So make sure you take care of everything you need to do for your DUI, including but not limited to paying your fees, finishing your alcohol classes, and any other term of probation. Your driving privilege in the new state can be directly affected by your DUI in your former state. Also, if you are on probation for your DUI when you decide to move, you may be found in violation of probation. However, you may be able to avoid that by qualifying for the Interstate Compact Act which will allow you to complete the terms of probation in your new state.
