On Election Day 2012, the citizens of Murrieta voted to enact Measure N which prohibits the use of red light cameras in the city.[1] This passage doesn’t necessarily spell the end for those $490 tickets as the California 4th District Court of Appeals ruled that opponents of Measure N would have to wait until the measure was passed to legally challenge citizens’ ability to change traffic laws. Considering the huge profits red light camera companies and its constituent cities make, the affected parties will most likely file suit.
The ordinance is set to be effective on December 14, 2012 but it’s not known if citations of alleged red light violations issued before that date will still be prosecuted through the courts.[2] If the court rules the measure to be lawful, its passage will have all red light cameras banned in Murrieta.
